Sara Bennett and Andrew Withell grow tropical fruit at Aotearoa Grown in Waipu, Northland. They planted their first tropical fruit orchard in 2018. The farm now grows more than 70 varieties of tropical fruit trees across over two hectares, using both outdoor and covered growing areas.
The fruit is grown spray-free. Their approach combines diverse plantings, low intervention agroecology, permaculture and syntropic agroforestry. Seasonal fruit includes papaya, bananas, starfruit, cherimoya, chocolate sapote and dragonfruit. Availability changes with the harvest, and individual fruit lines can sell out.
Fruit can be ordered through their online shop. They also offer farm tours for up to four adults and an off-grid cabin stay that includes a tour. They also sell at Grey Lynn Farmers Market in summer when fruit is in season.
