Daintree Ice Cream Company grows organic tropical fruit and makes ice cream, sorbets and gelatos on its 22-acre property at Diwan. The business began in 1993. Dave Mainwaring and Jenna Rumney later changed the farm to organic growing to reduce nutrient runoff into the surrounding environment. Rainfall waters the orchard’s fruit trees.
The fruit is picked in season and made into desserts on site in small batches. A Signature Cup contains four tropical flavours that change with the harvest. There are no packet mixes, syrups or artificial sweeteners. After eating, visitors can follow a free self-guided walk through the orchard to see the trees behind the flavours.
Find the public farm gate at 1819R Cape Tribulation Road, Diwan, about 14 kilometres north of the Daintree Ferry. It opens daily from 9am to 5pm except Christmas Day. EFTPOS and credit cards are accepted, but the farm recommends carrying cash because reception can fail in bad weather.
