Established in 2005 from bare paddocks, Kahikatea Farm is a 16-acre site in the Poukawa valley dedicated to living lightly and making a living from the land. The farm has a 3-acre food forest, silvopasture systems, and ponds, all designed according to permaculture principles.
The nursery, established in 2009, grows around 400 varieties of perennial vegetables, edible and medicinal herbs, dye plants, companion plants, shrubs, and trees. These plants are chosen for their multifunctionality, hardiness, and contribution to diverse, resilient gardens that provide fertility and pest control.
In 2010, the farm became certified organic with Organic Farm New Zealand (OFNZ). Visitors can join tours, workshops, and courses such as Introduction to Permaculture and Syntropic Food Forest Design. The nursery and farm are not currently open to the public except by prior arrangement for bulk orders or as part of tours and courses.
