The Sanctuary Mahi Whenua is a community garden established in 1998 by Brendan Hoare, Richard Main, and Unitec students. It was designed as a demonstration of organic systems and sustainable land management in an urban environment.
The garden grows native and heritage plants alongside food crops. The sanctuary supports ecological regeneration and cultural practice through its living surroundings. Access is currently limited due to construction fencing around the area since July 2024.
