Frans and Tineke de Jong arrived in New Zealand from the Netherlands in 2003 to start Southern Belle Orchard. They decided to specialize in feijoas, replacing trees with large-fruit varieties on the espalier system. The name stands for ‘Sustainable Biological Origin’, reflecting their core business of growing healthy products the way nature shows us.
They grow 3,000 feijoa trees and capsicums in greenhouses, all totally spray-free. Biological inoculants and natural predator insects are used to maintain soil health and control pests without synthetic chemicals. The harvest starts in mid-March and continues until early June.
The orchard is located at 418b Hinuera Road in Matamata. Products are sold through local markets and wholesale partners like Ceres, which aligns with their sustainable philosophy.
