Newstead Orchard is a family-run business where the land and trees remain owned by the McMiken family. Annie Perkins is currently buying into the business and managing fruit sales while learning orchard management from the third generation of the McMiken family.
The orchard grows seasonal pipfruit, stone fruit, and produce including apples, pears, plums, and vegetables. Vegetables are grown using regenerative and organic methods. The aim is to honour the history and tradition of the McMiken orchardists as they find new ways of sustaining access to local fruit for the Waikato.
The Orchard Farm Shop is open seasonally, with Braeburn and Granny Smith apples available direct to businesses via Upstock until the end of August. Public customers can also visit the Hamilton Farmers’ Market on Sundays during the season.
